Production Process ༉‧₊˚.

Hello and welcome back to my blog! This week, I watched a series of videos which broadened my knowledge on the topic of design and film production. Film production is something that I’ve been waiting to learn about in more detail for quite some time, so this week’s videos definitely peaked my interest.

Production Process

What is design thinking? Well, by watching ‘‘What Is Design Thinking?’’ I learned it is a philosophy and a set of tools which helps you solve your complications creatively. It specifically focuses on the human-centred side of creative problem-solving.

Throughout a design thinking process, you’ve got to empathise and figure out who you’re designing for and what their needs are, with which helps you innovate based on those needs.

I learned that there are five main steps to design thinking, which are:
1.     Empathising – this is practically the foundation to the design thinking structure. You’ve got to understand the people who you’re designing the product for. Ask yourself, what are their problems and what do they do? As I mentioned previously, this is a ‘‘human-centred’’ strategy of creative problem solving.
2.     Defining – in this step, you’re taking all of your information from step one and coming up with conclusions about the user’s needs and challenges, as well as figuring out the insights which you can put to use in designing your product.
3.     Ideating – in this step, you’re gathering everything that you’ve learned from the previous two steps and begin to construct a conclusion for an ideal product. This is when all of your ideas begin to look like a brainstorming workshop.
4.     Prototyping – after brainstorming through your ideas, you begin to focus on the few that you think might be worth converting into something realistic. You build your ideas into materials which are more testable.
5.     Testing – this is the final step in which you offer your prototypes for testing with users. Once you receive feedback, you’ve got to go back and repeat your steps, beginning with defining your product. Although this is the last step, you’ve got to fix through some trial and error in order to finalise the exemplary product.

5 Main Steps To Design Thinking

The focus of the three remaining videos that I have watched is film production and filming. By watching ‘‘Film Production Stages – Five Minute Film School’’, ‘‘The Process of Making a Documentary: Pre to Post Production’’ and ‘‘4 Easy Steps to Film a Short Documentary’’, I learned more about film making and the processes of pre-production, production and post-production.

Pre-production consists of steps taken before filming is commenced. It is the creation of your story, your script, and it is the gathering of crew. In this part of the production process, you’ve got to think about your budget and the locations to which it can take you. Additionally, you’ve got to put your targeted audience into consideration, as this is how you structure the rest of your film.

Production, also known as ‘‘principal photography’’, is the shooting of your film, which ends with a ‘‘wrap’’. This happens to be the most expensive part of the process because of the crew salaries.

Post-production is the finishing of your film. This is when all of the picture editing, visual effects, colour correction, music and sound effects are brought into action. Post-production is the longest part of the production process.

I am very excited to apply my new knowledge into the group project that we will begin working on very soon.
