The impact of Digital Media ✧

This week, I watched a series of videos which expanded my knowledge on the topic of digital media.

The first video that I have watched is called ‘‘Digital Media Are Networked | Digital Literacy 101’’.
Before I watched this video, I understood digital media as a source of content, be it entertainment, knowledge, etc. However, after I watched the video, I realised how broad and inclusive digital media really is. This is something I hadn’t particularly thought about in the past. As opposed to traditional media, digital media is interconnected and extremely interactive, giving you the opportunity to react, share and discuss your thoughts and opinions online. Whereas traditional media is a one way process, in which you receive information or entertainment through books, newspapers, magazines and radios.

The second video that I have watched is called ‘‘Digital Literacy and why it matters’’, in which I learned about the topic of digital literacy and why it’s important in society today. I learned that digital literacy is a skill that helps you navigate and communicate with others through different digital platforms and environments. This is extremely important nowadays, as a number of jobs require you to have a high level of information and communication technology or ‘‘ICT skills’’.
I found this video to be the most interesting to me as I discovered that digital literacy greatly impacts the world of education, as digital literacy skills are now necessary for a student to become employable after graduation.

The third and final video that I have watched is called ‘‘The essential elements of digital literacies: Doug Belshaw at TedxWarwick’’, this video is quite similar to the second video that I watched, as it expanded on the information and necessity of digital literacy. In this video, Doug informed us about the eight essential elements of digital literacies, which are:
-        Cognitive
-        Constructive
-        Communicative
-        Critical
-        Creative
-        Confident
-        Cultural
-        Civic
Doug claims that ‘‘Remix is at the heart of digital literacy  and it is the other end of the spectrum to elegant consumption’’.

I believe that there is a variety of reasons for why one might want to create and share media. Nowadays, we’ve got major reliance on our phones, tablets and laptops which all connect to the big platform of social media. With various apps in active use, people share content for entertainment, knowledge, advice, gaming and so much more.

  1. My favourite part about the blog post was the third and final video Darja wrote about. The layout caught my eye at first glance reading through it as it was different from the rest and she used quotations to back up the statement in which was the ted talk with Mr Belshaw. Darja done well in engaging me in reading this piece which I find very pleasing to look at.

The major two questions I have about the blog post that weren’t really answered was the third point with Mr belshaw. Darja goes briefly over the points such as what was mentioned in the ted talk video with Mr Belshaw as example cognitive, constructive, civic etc. The other question I have is expanding on the points to convey what she wants to get across. These questions in mind have me a little lost as I was trying to find what she meant but she briefly goes over it in excess amounts.

What I learnt from Darja’s point on the impact of digital media blog post was her point of view on the matter. It was very insightful on the way digital literacy is perceived nowadays and communicating. At the end she had a reference list which is a great way to help guide readers on where she got the information from. This technique could be applied to my own blogs in the future.

What if you expanded more on the points you are trying to convey.
