Media Ethics
Hi and welcome back to my blog!
This week I expanded my knowledge on the topic of media ethics, which can be broadly defined as a branch of ethics that addresses moral issues arising in connection with creation and distribution of information through the means of mass media.

In the beginning, it was a little difficult for me to understand how ethics wrapped around the topic of digital media. However, with the help of four videos, I began to understand the importance of ethics in the digital world.
After watching ‘‘Ethics’’, I began to understand the definition of that term and why it is important for us to apply ethics in our everyday use of digital media. Our ethics help us understand and interpret right or wrong in society, which could also be applied to the digital world as there is lots of spaces where we shouldn’t involve ourselves in.

The second video that I had watched is called ‘‘The medium is the message’’, where the creator explains the quote in a little more detail and tells us of the theories behind it, in particular, the power of content and ideas that are spread online. The creator claims that ‘‘the idea is that mediums have a far greater impact on the fundamental shape and nature of society than any message that is delivered through that medium’’, and I think that ethics tie in well into this statement.
It is very simple for one to get manipulated on the internet, be it to make a purchase, sign up for a subscription, share your email to be notified about a discount in a clothes shop, you name it! However, some of these may be misleading, therefore it’s important to be able to identify right from wrong in situations like these.

The last three videos that I had watched, ‘‘The Cambridge Analytica Scandal Explained’’, ‘’How dark patterns trick you online’’ and ‘’How one man manipulated all of America’’ all tie in with manipulation and how the internet is designed in order to capture our attention.
The Cambridge Analytica is a data marketing firm, which had harvested online information to create micro targeted content. It had used data collected from Facebook users in order to use it for advertisements not only to the users themselves, but also their friends.
This leads me to the topic of how the media is designed in order for you to forward your attention to a pop up or advertisement, which benefit the business in question. By watching ‘’How dark patterns trick you online’’, I found out about a design element called ‘’Roach Motel’’, this is a design that makes it particularly easy for you to get into a situation but tricky and confusing to get out of. For example, using colour and design to misdirect you and get you to click on a false offer.

Finally, the last video that I had watched, ‘’How one man manipulated all of America’’, this is somewhat similar to the video I had discussed above, as it is tactics for creative effective propaganda and misdirecting you into doing things you may not want to do. These four steps include:

I enjoyed reading this. The I could not find flaw in the Grammar and punctuation. And the writing did not trail on and on moving on from topic to topic each paragraph covering a different part of media ethics keeping the blog interesting and fresh. I liked how you used your own personal experience discovering about media in ethics to help the reader understand what it was, giving your writing a grounded and relatable feel. I also found the reference list very usable. The only issue I had is I feel you could of found a different kind of image as I feel using an image of words blends in too much with the rest of the blog which is also words
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading this. I could also not find flaw in the Grammar and punctuation. I enjoyed how the information wasn't randomly spread across the board I seemed to grasp the concept quite easily with the way you worded such parts of the post. I liked the way you kept it sort of personal by saying the first line stating at first you didn't properly understand media ethics but as you went on you and the reader bought grasped the idea of what media ethics is. I like the way you kept it simple yet almost hitting every point of what media ethics involve. I respected that you put a link to all the sources of where you found your information. The one thing I would say is that try to go into much detail with all the videos with the last two paragraphs I felt I was reading the same thing twice other than that it was a great piece and I learned a lot. Well done
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this post I felt It was very straight to the point and very little unnecessary information could be seen while reading through this blog. My favourite part of this blog was the beginning when you explained that you found it hard to wrap your head around it but you managed to do so when you had help from watching the videos.The way it was worded was also great I feel it is very suitable for all audiences and wouldn't be difficult for other people to read. On thing I would change would be to add a slight bit more information into the end of this blog, when you spoke about the final video you watched. Apart from this, I feel this is a very good blog and I learned a lot.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this blog it is probably the best blog I have reviewed so far the clarity, punctuation and spelling were amazing I could find any mistakes. Each paragraph was structured clearly and smoothly ran into the next there were no extra sentences that didn't need to be there each sentence had a purpose . The overall layout was really cool as well I like the way you changed the font i found it intriguing. My favourite part of the blog was at the beginning where you stated you were confused but the videos helped explain I like this paragraph a lot because it shows a willingness to work hard and to learn. Overall it was a really good blog
